Abstract

Taking a medical family history is a key role for the midwife during the antenatal period. This audit was developed following a National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA) alert on medium-chain acyl-coA dehydrogenase deficiency (MCADD) where it was noted that, anecdotally, midwives were often unsure of the relevance of the family history information. The findings show wide variation in the genetic family history information collected and the follow-up documented when a genetic condition has been identified.
