Abstract

The introduction of new roles for nurses in the health care system is not a new phenomenon. Nursing practice is constantly changing to accommodate the needs of individual societies and to adjust to changing health care demands. This article describes the role of the family health nurse (FHN) as it has been defined within Europe but with particular emphasis on its introduction in Tajikistan and Scotland. The different social, political, and economic situations of the countries in Europe have led to different approaches to and different requirements for practice, but the fundamental core of the new role is the same and many of the challenges faced by those introducing it are also similar.
