Abstract

BackgroundIt is often difficult for undergraduate nursing students to have sufficient opportunity to understand the role of the nurse in providing care for clients in the community . This article describes an innovative approach to teaching family and community nursing concepts via simulation. MethodsA unfolding simulation was developed which allowed nursing students to make four virtual visits with a family via Zoom. ResultsStudents developed skills in interviewing, an improved understanding of the use of technology in health care, increased awareness of the impact of values and beliefs on health and illness, and a greater awareness of the role of the nurse in the community. ConclusionsThe use of simulation provided an innovative, safe, and consistent learning experience for students, allowing them to gain a deeper understanding of family and community nursing.
