Abstract

The familial incidence of lupus erythematosus has been recognized for many years, for in 1901 Rona 21 described the condition in a brother and sister. In 1903 Sequeira 1 presented 2 families each with 2 sisters with lupus erythematosus. Legobbe 23 in 1937 was impressed by the finding of systemic lupus erythematosus in 8 members of one family and in 4 members of another family. In recent years the occurrence of 2 or more cases in one family has been reported with increasing frequency; however, lupus erythematosus in identical twins is rare. Von Gruenhagen 5 reported the occurrence of the discoid type, and Davis and Gutridge 3 plus Wagenhals and Burgeson 13 published cases of fatal systemic lupus erythematosus in identical twin sisters.
