Abstract

The UK population is ageing and as people age they are at greater risk of becoming frail and requiring assistance with fundamental aspects of care ( Office for National Statistics (ONS), 2013 ). Frail older people are at greater risk of being admitted to hospital and at risk of adverse effects of hospitalisation. If fundamental care needs are met, the risks of adverse effects are reduced. This article, the first in a series, explores how meeting fundamental aspects of care reduces the risks of adverse effects, in this case, falls.
