Abstract

The Mississippi Valley Population (MVP) of Canada geese (Branta canadensis) is one of the most intensively managed waterfowl populations in North America. Although one of the major management problems for these birds in Wisconsin has been agricultural crop depredation, their food habits have not been investigated beyond small samples analyzed in 1973 and 1974 (R. Ziegler, unpubl. rep., Wis. Dep. Nat. Resour., 1975). From 1965 to 1974, depredation complaints from farms surrounding Horicon Marsh averaged 108/ year, and claims for damage compensation payments from the State of Wisconsin averaged $5,040/year, with an annual range of $450-23,500 (Wis.
