Abstract

ABSTRACT When reading about African textiles online, one is likely to come across several articles that show concern about the authenticity of the African Wax print. This commentary is an attempt at understanding the historical implications of the central questions around the authenticity of textiles in Africa. I argue that the authenticity question opens up wider possibilities for understanding the gendered dynamics of textile production and consumption in Africa.
