Abstract
AbstractThe concepts of fake news, fake media and hate speech are common, especially in the social media. Various issues are dismissed as fake news. We define fake news as a deliberate and intentional lie, that is being masked as news. A typical feature of fake media is that the media in question engages in conscious manipulation, in which the media content or its context are intentionally altered to influence opinions. This chapter presents a case study from MV-Magazine, based on its 525 online publications. The digital material is central upon the creation of fake news, because the material can be manipulated to the point that the original meaning is lost, obscured or distorted. The main theme of hate speech in the magazine was humanitarian-based immigration. The targets of such hate speech were refugees and those who are tolerant or neutral in their opinions about immigration. The reasons were e.g. defending the ‘correct’ and ‘traditional’ values, combatting humanitarian-based immigration and opposing public. Hate speech and fake news are linked to media literacy. A library’s role in teaching media literacy is essential. Libraries provide access to information, but they must also teach people how to use it reliably.KeywordsFake newsFake mediaHate speechLibrariesMV-MagazineMisinformationMedia literacy
