Abstract
FairfieldNodal, formerly Fairfield Industries, Inc., has played an active role in the commercial development of autonomous ocean bottom node seismic technology. Our motivation to do so began in the highly obstructed shallow water environs off the coast of Louisiana. Autonomous ocean bottom node (OBN) technology offered a way forward to improve data quality and operational efficiency in this province where we had a long history of ocean bottom seismic (OBS) acquisition. Concurrent industry recognition of the potential of all azimuth 3‐D data acquisition for improving imaging in structurally complex deep water fields presented a unique opportunity to expand our development to include a deep water system. Also, motivated by the need for more channels and the operational efficiencies associated with cable‐free operations, the autonomous node concept has “migrated” onto land.
