Abstract

“Fair trial issues” explores what constitutes a just criminal system and the role a free press plays in nurturing it. Topics include the necessity of codification of laws, the derivation of government, and necessary elements for justice, such as no coerced confessions, Miranda warnings, public access to arrest records, a presumption of innocence, grand juries, impartial trial juries, voir dire, gag orders, public trials, broadcast of trials, Internet interference with judges' attempts to restrict information, legal representation, the right to confront witnesses, guilt only if overwhelming evidence is shown, punishment, post‐conviction review, and executions.
