Abstract
A considerable amount of circumstantial evidence seems to indicate that under certain conditions the adrenals are capable of producing oestrogenic and androgenic steroids. The factors influencing the release of these steroids by the adrenals are, however, incompletely understood. Human chorionic gonadotrophin (HCG) is said to induce the release of oestrogens in spayed mice, in so far as this can be judged from the increased uterine weight (Botella-Llusia, 1952, Cattaneo & Hecht-Lucari, 1952). On the other hand, no effect of HCG on the release of andromimetic substances from the adrenals of hypophysectomized-gonadectomized immature rats could be demonstrated, when the increase in the accessory reproductive organs was used as an indicator (Diczfalusy, Holmgren & Westman, 1950).
