Abstract

In the distribution system, surge arresters are less expensive compared to the other electrical equipments installed and their presence in the system goes unnoticed during the normal operation. Surge arresters are noticed only when they fail or when other system equipment fails. Distribution system surge arrester failure is interpreted in various different ways by utilities and manufacturers. It is important, for reliable operation of the system, to identify the reasons for the failure and resolve them immediately. In this paper, various possible reasons for failure of distribution class surge arresters is discussed and measures to prevent failure are also pointed out.
