Abstract
The breakage of the lug pads and the barrel welds on the air preheater is a common problem. This paper analyzes the fracture failure during the operation of the air preheater. Through the investigation of the working environment of the air preheater, the fracture morphology detection and the microstructure observation, the finite element method is used to predict the welding residual stress and thermo-mechanical stress at the lug pad and the barrel weld. The results show that the microstructure degration at high temperature and high thermomechanical stress synergistic effect are the main factors leading to the fracture with mixed mode of ductile fracture with dimples and brittle fracture with fluvial cleavage pattern. Last, some suggestions were put forward to avoid fracture during hoisting.
