Abstract

In the course of 60-year operation there has not come to a relevant damage of the journal bearing of the rope pulleys. After the replacement of the journal bearing of the reversible cable rope pulley of the cargo cableway it was blocked after 118 h of operation. The journal bearings were regularly replaced in two-and-a-half-year cycles, it is the period the operator set as the optimum lifetime of a journal bearing. The parts of the journal bearing were subjected to a complex analysis in order to determine the failure mechanism. The analyses consisted of the visual examination of the journal bearing damage parts, material analyses of the journal bearing, roughness measurement of the contact surfaces and the measurement of the dimensions of the journal bearing parts. The results of the analyses confirmed that the basic conditions for the production of the journal bearings as well as the tolerances essential for creating the journal bearing clearance were not met; the newly created journal bearing operates in a starved lubrication condition.
