Abstract

This article represents a field failure root cause analysis of two clutch systems used in an off-highway transmission. The failure of these clutch assemblies stalled the functions of transmission. The friction and pressure plates of clutch packs are severely worn out and broken. Similarly, various components in this clutch assemblies are investigated appropriately through visual inspection, metallurgical test and finite element modelling to understand the causes of failure. Based on this evaluation, it is understood that one of the transfer hubs used in this assemblies had less stiffness. The excess deformation of structural member hindered the clutch support and believed to be a problematic component that could have caused the failure. The inferences arrived based on this evaluation provides understanding of some of the possible causes of failure. The inferences of failure presented in this article is worth noting that it can improve the clutch design for similar transmission applications.
