Abstract

The subject of the paper is the results of the material analysis of the cracked axle of the tram. Fractographic analysis of the fracture surface was performed, the microstructure of the damaged part was observed, hardness profiles were measured and local chemical composition was determined by the EDX method. The failure occurred through a fatigue mechanism. The crack was initiated from surface defects of the welded material on the surface of the axle. The cause of the accident was the interplay of several negative factors: poor welding repair technology, unsuitable consumables, high levels of residual stresses and mechanical damage during assembly.
