Abstract

In a steel-making process, a briquetting roller failed prematurely. A failure analysis was performed and design modifications were suggested. The roller and shaft were assembled by a shrink fitting process. The residual stress due to the shrink fit and the rolling pressure combined to produce a fatigue loading on the roller. Cracks initiated in the water channel at the bore of the roller due to the corrosion fatigue.
