Abstract

Rationale: Faecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) has been used as a possible treatment option for restoring normal gut microbiota, mostly in Clostridium difficile infection. It involves the infusion of a faecal suspension from a healthy individual into the gastrointestinal tract of a patient, usually by enteral post-pyloric tube, enema or colonoscopy. The gastric infusion is avoided for the potential risk of bronchoaspiration and the possible reduction of effectiveness by inactivating the flora by the gastric acid.
