Abstract

The primary purpose of this chapter is to briefly review the principal characteristics and models for fading channels. A more detailed treatment of this subject can be found in standard textbooks such as those by Proakis, Rappaport, and Stuber. This chapter also introduces terminology and notation that will be used throughout the book. A brief qualitative description of the main characteristics of fading channels is presented in the next section. Models for frequency-flat fading channels, corresponding to narrowband transmission, are described. Models for frequency-selective fading channels that characterize fading in wideband channels is included.
