Abstract

<h3>To the Editor.</h3> —While I am supportive of Dr Bulger's<sup>1</sup>proposal for providing health care coverage to the underserved by academic medical centers (AMCs), he neglected to mention the relatively unique strength that AMC physicians have regarding their clinical practice, a faculty practice plan (FPP). Most AMCs have FPPs,<sup>2</sup>and these plans constitute an unusual resource for the clinical practice: a mechanism for reformation in practice style and substance. As a physician organization, FPPs antedate the structure typical of most provider practices. For example, while the frequency and size of group practice in the community has grown extensively only in recent years, the organization of clinical practice in AMCs has been in existence for more than 50 years.<sup>3</sup>As the vehicle for provider input and ingenuity, FPPs have been the principal force at many AMCs for organizing physician services in managed care, medical informatics, practice management, and
