Abstract

Most teacher preparation programs are not preparing preservice teachers for instruction in 21st century schools. Some faculty continue to use traditional methods of instruction. In order for new teachers to be comfortable with technology, university faculty must model technology in the classroom and integrate these tools throughout the preservice preparation period. This requires a significant change in the instructional strategies of many faculty. This change will be gradual, but can be facilitated by continual and quality faculty development. This professional development, coupled with adequate equipment, a supportive administration, a willing faculty and a dynamic plan that adjusts with changes in the needs of student and faculty, will meet the challenge of providing teachers with 21st century information technology skills. This paper discusses the research based planning and implementation of such a model at Louisiana Tech University.
