Abstract
The academic and career development of faculty is paramount to the success of both individual faculty members and the institutions in which they work. This career development begins during the transition from postgraduate or graduate training to faculty appointment, and continues to retirement. Although faculty development for academic and career development is not strongly represented in the literature, this chapter will outline how faculty development can, and should, play a key role. Faculty development programs and resources can facilitate the development and application of the knowledge, understanding, skills, and strategies that faculty members require to meet the expectations of their multiple roles. Faculty development both for individual faculty members, and for leaders in the institutions in which they practice, can support and promote the alignment of values and goals with the overall aim of facilitating career success and fulfillment.
