Abstract

This paper presents a case study in the application of computer-based statistical process control (SPC) techniques in a German cold rolling mill company. The major systems requirements and design features are described, together with a discussion of some of the salient features of the implementation strategy. The application uses a simple, but effective solution to factory-wide data-collection networks, and explains some of the features of this network. The system provides a significant improvement in the provision of quality and management information available to control the cost and quality of the cold-rolled product. The system, with some modification, may be applicable to other manufacturing processes—tube production, bar rolling, plastic extrusion, etc.
