Abstract

When sudden mechanical perturbations are applied at a joint, the muscle which is undergoing stretch exhibits a complex EMG response which includes both short latency and long latency components. The short latency component (M1) represents a spinal reflex mediated mainly by group IA muscle spindle afferents. The origin of the long latency component (M2) has been a topic of ongoing debate. Some investigators believe that it is mediated entirely or in part by a long loop transcortical pathway, while others argue that it can be accounted for entirely by spinal mechanisms.
