Abstract

Introduction: Current shortages of registered nurses working in psychiatric hospitals in the United States are exacerbated by turnover.Aim: This research describes factors that are associated with intent to leave among nurses working in a large inpatient psychiatric hospital.Method: This was a descriptive, correlational study.Results: 75% of respondents (n = 94) reported that they were satisfied with their current positions. 36% (n = 34) reported actively seeking employment elsewhere. Intent to leave correlated with perceptions about workplace relationships and work environment factors.Discussion: Work relationships, opportunity for education, and recognition for education were factors that were primarily related to intent to leave.
