Abstract

Intimate partner violence (IPV), or physical, sexual, emotional, controlling, and harassing behavior by a current or former intimate partner, is a worldwide social and public health problem, costing approximately 4.4 trillion USD per year globally. Drawing upon the social-ecological model of IPV, this chapter reviews the individual-, relationship-, and community-level predictors of the desistance of IPV. It also reviews four commonly used IPV risk assessment instruments: Ontario Domestic Assault Risk Assessment, Spousal Assault Risk Assessment, Danger Assessment, and Domestic Violence Screening Instrument. The chapter concludes with a discussion of how the risk assessment tools might be used in clinical practice to access individual strengths and/or protective factors for aggression and violence in intimate relationships.
