Abstract

The motivation for this poster comes from observations made by Collins [2] about factors of iterated resultants and discriminants of polynomials in three variables. This poster presents theorems which explain some of Collins' observations. A starting point for our work was a letter from van der Waerden [7] to Collins which provides intuitive and informal explanations for some of Collins' observations. We are hopeful that the results contained herein could provide the basis for improvements to some algorithms involving resultant and discriminant calculation, such as the cylindrical algebraic decomposition algorithm.
