Abstract

Abstract This paper focuses on the quality of mud logging data and the need for improving the quality. Included examples clearly demonstrate that traditional mud logging data suffers from errors and poor quality which limits its quantitative use, for instance in drill bit optimisation or modelling work. Special concern is paid to the accuracy of the depth, the rate of penetration and the surface weight on bit. It is concluded that there is a significant potential for improving the accuracy of these variables.
