Abstract

Swine aortic explants grown in synthetic medium alone have been demonstrated to contain, in varying amounts, both a factor which stimulates DNA degradation and one which stimulates DNA synthesis. Any swine serum has been shown to have a nondialyzable component which causes DNA breakdown, a substance, largely dialyzable, which stimulates DNA synthesis, and possibly an inhibitor of DNA synthesis. By extrapolation to the situation in vivo, these factors may well play a role in determining variation in individual suceptibility to atherosclerosis.
