Abstract
Punishment has always been a motivating factor towards ensuring deterrence in any society. Where punishment is not implemented, such society is ensued by breakdown of law and order. To ensure punishment is effective, it must be swift, severe, and certain. With the understanding of system theory, the study had the three agents of criminal justice system in Nigeria as the main respondents purposively selected due to its relevance to the study.The study being a phenomenological design, adopted a qualitative method of data collection and analysis to investigate the factors affecting celerity of punishment in Kwara State, Nigeria. Both in-depth interview and discourse analysis for the method of data collection and analysis respectively. The study found out that economic, administrative, Nature of crime, and corruption were the main factors affecting celerity of punishment. It is therefore recommended that administrative needs of the agencies should be met towards motivating the agencies to effectiveness amongst others
