Abstract

Using 30 Ss and 10 words for which the total possible number of decompositions were obtained, factors most associated with success in finding valid decompositions were maximum number of available decompositions, length of the stimulus word, and S's IQ. The capacity to make visual and phonetic associations among decompositions also appeared to play a substantial but secondary role.
