Abstract

Why sharks attack humans is not fully understood. However, it is believed that most unprovoked attacks are cases of misidentification wherein human-produced sensory stimuli are interpreted by sharks as being from natural prey items, triggering predatory attack (Burgess 1990; Myrberg and Nelson 1991). International Shark Attack File (ISAF) investigations of such interactions document an average of 64 unprovoked shark attacks,CONTENTS13.1 Introduction 541 13.2 Methodological Approaches 543
