Abstract

This study aimed to identify the prevalence of depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation among medical students at the Federal University of Alagoas, Arapiraca campus. This was a cross-sectional study carried out between September and December 2022. The final sample consisted of 145 volunteers, 53.1% of whom were male. The results showed that 34.5% had depressive symptoms and 16.55% had suicidal ideation, with these conditions being associated with each other. In addition, students who declared themselves to be atheist/agnostic had more suicidal ideation compared to the others [p<0.01]. These results indicate a higher prevalence of depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation in the sample investigated, pointing to the need to develop public policies that ensure the mental and physical integrity of medical students.
