Abstract

ABSTRACT Soil reaction forces for three treader designs were measured in the field. The treaders were tested at three operating depths, four forward velocities and seven gang angles. Treader design, operating depth and treader gang angle significantly affected draft, side draft and vertical force. Draft, side draft and vertical force were linearly proportional to operating depth, trigonometric transformations of gang angle, cone index, and inversely proportional to the peripheral velocity squared. Prediction equations were developed relating reaction forces to depth, gang angle, cone index and peripheral velocity.
