Abstract

Purpose: This is a descriptive survey research paper that examined the relationship between the cultural competence ofnurses and the factors of self-efficacy and intercultural communication skills at a general hospital. The study further in vestigated the effects of the above factors on their cultural competence, to provide basic data for plans designed to im prove the same. Methods: The subjects included 200 nurses who had experience in taking care of multicultural patientsat general hospitals with 100 beds or more in C City, K Province. Data were collected between May 20 to July 20,2019. The collected data were analyzed on the Jamovi 0.9.6.4 statistical program using descriptive statistics, t-test,ANOVA Turkey test, Pearson’s correlation coefficient, and hierarchical analysis. Results: Hierarchical analysis was per formed to identify the factors influencing the subjects cultural competence. The analysis of the results showed that inter cultural communication skills (β=.62, p<.001) had the biggest influence on their cultural competence, followed by educa tional background (β=.15, p=.001) and experience with multicultural nursing education (β=-.10, p=.031) in that order. The regression analysis of cultural competence was statistically significant (F=36.1, p<.001), and it had an explanatorypower of 55%. Conclusion: The development of educational programs for their higher cultural competence should be ac companied by policy and financial support from medical institutions and the Korean Nurses Association.
