Abstract

Laboratory studies, using synthetic brine, have shown that it is possible to quantify the thermodynamic driving force for the formation of alkaline scales by a consideration of saturation pH values for the various scaling species. Scaling potential profiles, using this concept, are presented to illustrate this point and demonstrate how the driving force may be measured at various points in the unvented sections of an operating MSF plant.
