Abstract

Abstract Confirmatory factor analysis is the preferred multivariate model for describing multitrait–multimethod matrices. Trait‐only factor analysis assumes that all common variation is due to shared traits. An expanded trait‐method factor model allows for additional variation due to shared methods. Experience shows that the trait‐only model fits few empirical matrices but that the more general trait‐method model is usually plagued by estimation problems. Reasons for the model failure are referenced.
