Abstract

Drug overdose is the leading cause of death for Americans younger than age 50 years and has contributed to the US life expectancy declining for 2 consecutive years. Opioid-, alcohol-, and cocaine-related death rates have been increasing rapidly. Addressing this public health crisis requires an understanding of the science behind addiction and addiction treatment. Addiction is a chronic illness from which most people recover. Like other chronic conditions, treatment includes combinations of medication and behavioral interventions that are delivered with a patient-centered approach that respects the preferences and autonomy of affected people.
