Abstract

Switzerland is to have a new synchrotron radiation source. Last month the Swiss parliament voted unanimously to build the Swiss Light Source (SLS) at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Villigen. One of series of third-generation synchrotron sources being planned for Europe, SLS is scheduled to begin operation 2001 (Physics World March p5). Initial research will focus on materials science, surfaces and interfaces, micro and nano structures, and protein crystallography.
