Abstract

A new high-field magnet that is capable of generating magnetic pulses that last about a hundred times longer than is possible with existing magnets was unveiled at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico at the end of August. Powered by a billion-watt generator, the magnet produces a peak field of 60 tesla in pulses lasting a tenth of a second. “This magnet will revolutionize research in high magnetic fields,” says Greg Boebinger, director of the Los Alamos campus of the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (NHMFL).
