Abstract

A multipurpose system for detecting heavy ions has been made at the Laboratorio Nazionale del Sud. It consists of a multianode ionization chamber coupled to a time-of-flight spectrometer whose start and stop signals are given by a microchannel plate and a parallel-plate avalanche counter, respectively. This system allows us to identify the charge and the mass of evaporation residues up toZ≅30 andA≅50 values, when their energy is around 1 MeV/A.
