Abstract

Publisher Summary This chapter presents methods for analyzing the levels of action of modulators. The analysis is based on results obtained in studies of the kinetics of the secretion of (—)-[ 3 H]noradrenaline from guinea-pig isolated vas deferens. The chapter presents three different experimental approaches to discriminate between two possible levels of action of modulators of noradrenahne secretion: (1) the analysis of the effects of a modulator on the dependence of the secretory mechanism on external calcium, (2) the comparison of the effects of a modulator on the secretion evoked by electrical nerve stimulation and by direct depolarization with K + , and (3) the analysis of possible interaction between the facilitating effect of repetitive stimulation and α-adrenoceptor mediated autoinhibition of noradrenaline secretion.
