Abstract

In this work, crystalline two-dimensional (2D) tungsten disulfide nanodisc-like structures (1T-WS2) and its nanocomposite with graphite sheets synthesized using a facile two-step solvothermal procedure for photoelectrochemical (PEC) oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The XRD patterns revealed the existence of WS2 (1T phase) crystalline structure. Both WS2 nanodiscs and graphite were ultrasonicated to exfoliate the sheets and the suspension was solvothermally treated to design a WS2/graphite (WS2/G) nanocomposite. Fascinating flower-like nanostructures composed of nanodiscs observed during the detailed morphological investigation. The FE-SEM observation demonstrated well-dispersed graphite sheets in WS2 nanodiscs. The photoelectrochemical water splitting performance of bare WS2 and WS2/G hybrid photoanodes investigated under simulated 1 SUN irradiations revealed threefold increase in the photocurrent density of WS2/G hybrid photoanode compared to WS2.
