Abstract

The self-healable polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogels were prepared by the cyclic freezing/thawing method. Effect of PVA content on the crystalline structure, self-healability and water stability of PVA were explored. Results show that the self-healability of PVA hydrogels depends on the PVA content and emerges at the PVA content of 25wt%. The PVA content induces the crystal structure of PVA to change. The change shows two transition points at the PVA contents of 6wt% and 12wt%. The crystal structure of PVA significantly affects the tensile strength and water stability of PVA hydrogels. The high water stability of PVA hydrogels results from an increase in crystallite size or crystallinity of PVA.
