Abstract

Oil leakage/spillage and discharge of organic liquids pose severely threat to ecological environment and human health. Herein, hydrophobic porous monolith was fabricated via the polymerization of high internal phase emulsions (HIPEs) stabilized from charge-driven assembled polymers and the introduction of butyl methacrylate (BMA), and the water contact angle is up to 129 ± 2°. The monolith was hierarchical porous, leading to absorb various oils and organic solvents. The absorption capacity of monolith for different solvents ranges from 17.3 to 53.0 g/g, demonstrating excellent absorption. Meanwhile, the monolith shows excellent oil/water separation effect and high cycle efficiency. Therefore, the novel sponge might be an ideal candidate in dealing with oil contamination.
