Abstract
Recent mapping in Essex and Suffolk at 1:10 000 scale and an associated borehole programme conducted by IGS together with a re-examination of critical sections, boreholes and other records elsewhere in the London Basin, have led to a lithostratigraphical correlation of the Woolwich and Reading Beds (Palaeocene). A sedimentary lithofacies model is constructed. It indicates an oscillating coastline with a sand barrier and tidal inlet complex. On the back-barrier side are mudflats and lagoonal sediments which have been subjected to extensive pedogenesis. Towards the open sea are littoral sands. The model is intended as a framework and guide for future detailed sedimentological research.
