Abstract

Statement of the Problem: Patients with unoperated cleft lip/palate have nearly normal facial growth, whereas patients with a labiopalatal repair often exhibit midfacial retrusion. This abnormal facial growth is often ascribed to deficient intrinsic midfacial development or repair of the cleft lip or palate, or both. The aim of this study was to compare cephalometric data from patients with repaired unilateral complete cleft lip/alveolus (UCCLA) and bilateral complete cleft lip/alveolus (BCCLA) to patients with repaired unilateral and bilateral complete cleft lip/palate (UCCL/P, BCCL/P). The only difference between these two groups was the presence of a repaired cleft of the secondary palate. Comparison may provide insight into the etiology of impaired facial growth in patients with repaired cleft lip/palate.
