Abstract

Given the criticisms leveled against popular romantic fiction and its readership, women readers often find it necessary to employ face-saving strategies in social situations. This study focuses on the strategies of prevention and correction that readers employ in situations where they are discredited or discreditable. Preventative strategies include concealing the reading and criticizing the books and other readers. The corrective strategies deal with the intellectual value of the books and the role they play in the lives of the readers. Separation strategies span the preventative and corrective conditions. This study concludes that facework is both an internal and external process.
