Abstract

The author orients readers to the basic features of Facebook and its various uses in the teen world. She then describes her own experience with it, reviewing her use and that of her peers, to consider its social and psychological effects. She discusses the benefits of the varied and rich communication possible through Facebook, including certain advantages with which some adults are unfamiliar. She notes that the site encourages voyeurism and narcissism, but believes that social media is not often their primary cause. Overall, she concludes that the problems with Facebook are reflective of broader, long-standing problems with social values that lead to alienation, and that this alienation does not outweigh its benefits.
