Abstract

At 18 Patrick Geoghegan was working as a trainee accountant. One day his boss pointed out to him an error in some figures he had calculated. It turned out be a lucky mistake. His accounts were out by about two pence and he realised that he was in the wrong business. He went home, opened the Irish Independent and was drawn to the smallest advert. All it said was ‘Shenley Hospital looking for nurses. Would you like to train?’. He tells Thelma Agnew what happened next
